FSF | Mayday 裡的 Henery Bradin
F Scott Fitzgerald創作的短篇故事May Day（點此閱讀全文）於 1920 年首次刊登在《The Smart Set》雜誌，是一次相當有野心的嘗試。Fitzgerald 把三個不相關的故事串在一起，這三條線分別是：1919 年的抗議/暴動、主角 Gordon Sterrett 的悲慘故事以及底層士兵 Carroll Key 跟 Gus Rose 的慘劇。
雖然不盡完美，但我算是喜歡這個故事，特別是因為一向被當作只專注在寫小情小愛的 Fitzgerald 嘗試著在他的故事裡融入政治討論。
這篇 medium 文章，我特別想紀錄一下我對 May Day 裡 Henry Bradin 這個角色的一些想法。
Henry Bradin 是故事中的落魄（較低層的）中產階級主角 Gordon Sterrett 戀愛對象Edith Bradin（上流社會人士）的哥哥。又是一個 Fitzgerald 典型的窮小子戀上富家女的情節。
Henry Bradin
For all her sleek beauty, Edith was a grave, slow−thinking girl. There was a streak in her of that same desire to ponder, of that adolescent idealism that had turned her brother socialist and pacifist. Henry Bradin had left Cornell, where he had been an instructor in economics, and had come to New York to pour the latest cures for incurable evils into the columns of a radical weekly newspaper.
Henry Bradin 第一次在May Day登場的段落，從這裡我們可以知道：
- 他是社會主義者
- 他喜歡和平
- 他曾經是大學講師（社會階級較高人士）
- 他放棄較高社會地位的大學講師工作成為專欄作家
- 認為自己在排除社會的惡
- 他工作的報社被認為在散播極端想法
我覺得特別有趣的是，他喜歡和平和社會主義和極端報紙之間的矛盾。當然並不是說社會主義者就一定很暴力和極端，只是剛好 May Day 的背景的抗議/暴動是由社會主義者發動的。（1919 年的抗議/暴動，下次再仔細研究。）
角色朔造
之前在一篇討論 May Day 的論文（“They’re coming up!”: Disciplining the Urban Landscape in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “May Day”）裡看到，Fitzgerald 只擅長創作自己接觸過的人物（中上流社會人物），所以故事裡的中下階層的人較為扁平，沒有變化。（例如 May Day 裡的 Rose 和 Key。）
不過我覺得，May Day 裡的理想社會主義者 Henry 雖然戲份不多，也沒有太多表現的地方（主要是敘事者的描述，Henry 這個角色比較少有自己的行動，但也因為 Henry 並不是主要角色）。但有趣的是，也許這個角色也有 Fitzgerald 認識的人作為角色創造基礎。
在“Fitzgerald’s Political Development”一文中 Scott Donaldson 整理了 Fitzgerald 對於政治的想法以及參與。（Scott Donaldson 寫了不少關於 Fitzgerald 跟 Hemingway 的研究。）讓我想到“May Day”的地方是，他提到 Fitzgerald 在普林斯頓期間開始接觸政治，並在 1917 年認識了一位叫 Henry Hyacinth Strater 的學生。
關於這位 Henry Hyacinth Strater，Scott Donaldson 的形容如下：
Then in the spring of 1917, Fitzgerald discovered the embodiment of his political ideals in Henry Hyacinth Strater, of Louisville, leader of the democratic anti-club movement at Princeton and a pacifist disciple of Tolsoty and Edward Carpenter.
（Edward Carpenter 是一個英國社會主義詩人。）
我不知道 democratice anti-club movement是 什麼（之後再查查看），不過這樣看起來，我覺得 Fitzgerald 是以這位 Henry Hyacinth Strater 為原型寫出 “May Day” 裡的 Henry。而且最後這個角色在身體上受傷了，但和 Fitzgerald 故事中常出現的接受道德批判的有錢階級角色（例如 The Great Gatsby 裡的 Tom 跟 Daisy）不同，沒有遭受到道德批判（沒有傷害無辜的人、並且在混亂中試圖挺身而出，以討論的方式代替暴力）。
*與本文完全無關，但 Henry Hyacinth Strater 也是 Hemingway 的好友，並且為 Hemingway 畫過畫像。
